ABOUT THE WORK
The first exclusively composed, written and designed New Opera Hero work was ‘Parallel Observations’. Extracts were performed in Cairo for a select audience before it premiered at the Royal Opera Liege, Belgium in May 2009. More than a thousand people partied at the sold out show in the opera house, which was performed by members of the Liege Opera and NOH.
It is loosely based on a framework of the parallel dynamics inside a family and the microcosm of molecules that they are seemingly part of. The conductor becomes a scientist who observes and directs his “experiments”, and the musicians are characters inside the universe that is created on stage.
Since then N.O.H have had performances and screenings in London, Berlin and St. Petersburg, including OneDotZero festival and a headline slot at Kinetica Art Fair. They were also the 2010 winners of the MAMA Music Awards in London and placed 2nd at the international Randstad VJ Awards.
Technologically they experiment with 3D stereoscopic and holographic projections, infrared or Kinect tracking and real-time animations to achieve life-like illusions on stage. They are also working with a Canadian research group on tactile systems, to develop a language that enables deaf people to “feel” music being performed.
ABOUT THE VISION
NEW OPERA HERO are creating a new platform which is open to other bands and artists that are interested in this new concept of music performance. They call it AudioAnimata.
The idea of AudioAnimata was conceived by Steff and Mike who have been at the forefront of audio/visual productions for more than 10 years and who were looking for new ways to connect concert, art installation and stage performance within the structure of a band.
Their concept is to create an on stage multimedia collage in which every element influences and changes the overall performance. The production process is not built around a finished script or score; instead it is the combination of various building blocks. Musical themes, story characters, images, technology, and acrobatics are shuffled around like a painter moving parts of a collage around a canvas until they fall into place and reveal the final picture.
The fact that N.O.H creates in different artforms switches the focus from creating a new genre or style within one field to the creation of an alternative workflow between different fields.
